Laptops get slower especially if we use them daily or have been using them for some time and as we access more and more internet sides, add fav’s to favourites, allow cookies, install more apps, open multiple apps,… All these activities use more and more resources and some hold on to these resources indefinitely. Some heavy users that are laptop performance driven say they format and re-install their laptops on yearly basis to get the best performance. Not all of us have time or energy to do that though (I have never done that myself). But if I notice that my laptop is getting slower, I do the following:
1. Free up storage space, including emptying the recycle bin
2. Do a disk cleanup/ fragmentation (via c drive properties) and chkdsk
3. Delete temporary internet files and history
4. Check apps that were added and not often used to see if they are taking up resources and delete them if I can afford to do so.
5. Windows updates can slow down the laptop big time. It’s good to make sure that these are not downloading/installing during our busy time of the day. And it’s important to also check every now and then that they are updating successfully, because if they are failing, they keep on retrying and that chows data and use a lot of resources and these can contribute to low performance (especially Windows 10).
6. Also make sure that you do not have more than one antivirus softwares running on the laptop as these can cause conflict and slow down the laptop.

Herewith a few (basic) tips to try and improve performance on your Windows devices (related to no. 1 above). It’s basically about manually deleting the temp and prefetch files. Here are the steps to follow:
Please do not do this if you are busy downloading or installing any software or updates or while your computer is busy. Basically, your computer must be idle, else you might interrupt computer jobs or processes that are in progress:
1. Click on the Windows icon or search on the bottom left of your Windows 10 device and type Run,
2. In the Run pop up window, type the following, one at a time, and select and delete all temp files when the folder opens:
a. temp
b. %temp%
c. Prefetch
That’s it!
Hopefully you can see some performance improvement after doing these steps..
NB!!! Please don’t try this if you are not comfortable deleting unused files on your device or if you are uncomfortable with this process.
